Congratulations all of our fantastic chess players from Netherton Moss who managed to reach the Chess Megafinal, what an achievement!
Here is how it went…
For the second year chess players from Sefton schools headed to Poulton-le-Fylde on Saturday 2nd May to compete in the chess Megafinal.
The children had qualified for the Megafinal by their performance in the schools tournaments which took place in the spring term.
The Megafinal is the second stage of a national competition offering the children a chance to qualify for the Gigafinal by scoring four points or more from their six games.
The Megafinal had an increased entry from last year with over 250 children competing on the day, 50 of these children were from the Sefton schools.
The event is a six round tournament which tests the children’s stamina and concentration as well as their chess ability.
All the children were a credit to their schools and all seemed to enjoy the day.
Top scorer from Sefton was Harry Pollock from Kings Meadow, who scored 5 points to finish second in the boys U11 section, also in this section David De La Morena from St William scored 4 points to also qualify for the Gigafinal.
The girls from Bishop David Sheppard Maria Dactu and Dominika Brzezinska both scored 4 points in the girls U11 section to qualify
The boys from Litherland Moss performed fantastically well in the boys U10 section, Daniel Billingham scoring 4.5 points and he will be joined in the Gigafinal by John Finn and John Hislop who both scored 4.
Charlie Holt from Netherton Moss and Jakub Gluszko from Bishop David Sheppard also scored 4 points to qualify.
The final and youngest qualifier from Sefton was Hannah Hodgson from Netherton Moss who scored four points in the girls U9 section.
This is a tremendous achievement for all these children and we wish them all the best in the Gigafinal.
For the first time this year we had representatives from our two newest schools Hatton Hill and Green Park playing in the Megafinal, none of their children qualified but the experience gained will be invaluable next year.
